Big Help After A Hiking Mishap

My friend Tita and I hiked Mt. Olympus, at the top of St. Louis Heights. The total trek is about six miles (three miles in, three out). About 10 minutes into our descent, I slipped and heard a loud pop and before I knew, I was eating dirt.
This guy passing us, Mike, was now right by my side, asking if I was ok. I could still move my toes, so I figured it wasn’t broken but it just really hurt.
Now, I am 5-foot-6, 219 pounds short of fire rescue, no one is carrying me off this ridge.
Mike and Tita were amazing. Tita went ahead on the trail to move the car from the St. Louis Heights entrance to the other entrance (Waahila) on Alani Drive, which was a straighter trail. After moving the car, she would make her way up Waahila and meet us on the way down.
Step by painful step, Mike and I began the descent. He wasn’t sure about where or how he should hold me. He asked permission to touch me here or place his hand there. He kept apologizing if he thought he touched me inappropriately. I was just worried I’d knock him over and he’d get hurt.
We met up with Tita as planned. She had a bag of ice, orange juice and water.
I was so happy to see her. After a short break, we continued out together. I got hurt around 12:30; we made it out around 6:30.

Tita Kim gives all the credit to Mike McMann, a retired Schofield soldier.
“We called him Archangel Michael. At times he actually picked her up and carried her. He was supposed to pick up his daughter at Camp Erdman but was stuck on the trail with us. We wrote him a check, which he tore up, saying something led him to be on that trail at that time.”
Mike McMann says no big deal:
“She sprained her ankle, so anyone would have helped her in the same way. We made it down the hill, and I was just a few minutes late picking up my daughter.”

Thank you for providing such a wonderful venue for the people of Hawaii to give APPLAUSE to local humanitarians who demonstrate the warmth of the island spirit that makes our state the special place it is!
As we find ourselves upon the first “angel-versary” of losing our first of two canine “boys,” we want to applaud the amazing compassion extended by a local veterinarian and her staff.
Dr. Pauline Koreyasu and her staff at both Kapalama Pet Hospital and Kakaako Pet Hospital went far beyond what anyone could expect with both our dogs Sam and Max.
From making herself available after hours the first time Sam literally stopped dead in his tracks as a result of a splenic bleed, to the final closeto-midnight hour when she traveled to our home to assist our SARDSblinded Max, Dr. Koreyasu was there to guide us with the most difficult part of having our wonderful boys cross the “bridge” and saying goodbye.
Dr. Koreyasu and her staff never failed to afford us the time and space to stay with and comfort our boys, whether it be during their busiest moments or in the wee of the morning. Dr. Koreyasu arranged schedules so our boys would get what they needed to be comfortable as they approached their parting from us.

“Dr. Koreyasu has such deep feelings for her patients, ” says Pet Hospital Manager Laura Tavares.
“Animals are part of our family. The Arakakis went through so much. We miss Sam and Max, too. When it’s time to say goodbye we can’t take the pain away, but we try to make the patients and their owners as comfortable as possible.
