Hi Pamela,
I am a Hawaii Literacy volunteer, and we were being honored at the volunteer appreciation evening at the Boy Scouts headquarters behind Queen Emma Summer Palace one Sunday.
Somehow I got on the wrong bus. The driver dropped me off at Queen Emma and Vineyard and told me this was as close to Pali Highway as his bus route could take me. I disembarked and walked to Vineyard and Pali Highway.
It was at least a mile (uphill) from Pali and Puiwa. I waited at the bus stop at Pali/Vineyard, praying that I would get to the appreciation dinner before it was over. A kind lady named Mavis (wearing a YMCA shirt) confirmed that it was much too far to walk. She volunteered to drive me to the volunteer appreciation dinner!
I made it before it was over. I want to thank Mavis at the YMCA for volunteering to drive me to be recognized as a volunteer. Now is her time to be recognized. Thank you, Mavis!

Dear Yvonne,
Mavis Yamada has been working at the YMCA welcome desk since Aloha Airlines folded. A former flight attendant and airport clerical worker, she loves meeting people.
“I saw this woman looking kind of lost around the bus stop,” she says. “I don’t usually do this, but she looked very motherly so I asked if she needed help. She told me her story, and I knew there was no way she was going to make the event in time if she had walked. She told me she does volunteer work, and that was good enough for me. I’m so glad that I helped her.”
