Dear Pamela,

I bought a huge bag of paper towels at a store in Pearl City. Having placed it on the bottom rung of the shopping cart, I forgot to put it into my car. When I realized what I had done, I called the store and was happy to learn that an honest person had returned it to the customer service desk. My APPLAUSE goes to this honest person and to MidWeek. Where else can a grateful person acknowledge an unknown person than through APPLAUSE , which is read by just about everyone on Oahu?

Dear Pamela,

A belated thank you to three concerned UH coeds from a grateful senior citizen. I fell at the bus stop mauka of Dole and University while attempting to catch the bus. One of them assisted me to regain my feet, the other two gave me tissues and napkins to staunch my bleeding.

They called campus security, who called police, fire and ambulance. I hope they didn’t miss any classes by remaining until the ambulance took me away. Fortunately a CAT scan and MRI revealed no further injury. After several stitches and two weeks of “shiners,” I am OK. Thank you again for your aid and concern.

Dear Pamela,

A big mahalo to the young military man in a gray Rav who gave some kids a much-needed lesson in the Bishop Museum parking lot. I am a middle school teacher who was with a class on an excursion. After touring the museum, we settled down on the lawn for lunch. A group of teenagers from another group was eating in the parking lot, leaning up against a truck. When they were done, they threw their garbage on the ground. This man walked over and said, “You know, that’s not the right place for that.” After some grumbling, the boys picked up their trash and walked it over to the can. What I think is wonderful is that my students (and others on the lawn) saw the whole thing. What a good lesson for them, too.

Dear M, Daniel and Kay,

Our anonymous angels are often catalysts for developing the habit of helping others. Young people learn by example from parents, teachers and neighbors. Your Good Samaritans are creating good deeds in the future.
