Don’t Leave Pets In A Hot Car

I recently was very sick and went to the Waianae Comprehensive Hawaiian Healing Center for an afternoon lomi massage to relieve body aches. It was a cool, rainy day so I left my dachshund in the front seat without leaving the moon roof open as it would rain in on him. An hour and a half later upon completion, I was horrified to see that the sun had came out. As I opened the windows remotely, I noticed a lady parked beside me had put a blanket or towel over the window to provide shade for my dog from the sun. I was so grateful for her saving my dog’s life when I was so delirious. I was absolutely mortified at my actions and she didn’t even scold me. Because of her my 18year-old dog is still alive and well today despite my stupidity.

This is a good time for another reminder to us all. “In Hawaii’s climate, it’s never safe to leave a pet in the car even for just a few minutes,” says Kristin Herrick of the Hawaiian Humane Society. Temperatures can climb to 160 degrees, even with the windows cracked, and dogs can quickly develop heatstroke or suffocate. If you see an animal in a parked car, note the car make, model and color, then go to the nearest stores and ask the managers to page the owner. If the owner can’t be found, call 911.”

A huge mahalo to Craig Miyamoto of XLent Tow. My Volvo died in the middle of Friday rush-hour traffic on Nimitz Highway. Craig did not have to stop because he was on his way to work (not his towing job), but he was kind enough to stop and help, even if it meant he would be late for work. It meant a lot to me because people in a rush were swearing and I was getting very flustered.

Craig Miyamoto of Xlent Tow urged me not to make a big deal out of this because for him, it was business as usual. “I was on my way to my next job and saw her stuck in the middle of the road,” he says. “I asked if I could help. She was nice enough to send me a Starbuck’s gift certificate. A really nice lady.”
