Aloha Pamela,

Mahalo to Richard of Otis Elevators. I was at Hawaii Opera Plaza trying to get to my dental appointment. When I got to the lobby, the elevator was “down.” I called the doctor’s office and explained that I was downstairs, on crutches, and the elevator wasn’t working. I couldn’t climb the stairs. Richard overheard my situation and offered to “run” the elevator so I could make my appointment. He then asked how long I expected to be there. I said about 1 1/2 hours. He said he would try to get it done by then. As promised, he completed it before I was ready to leave.

I tried to give him some money, but he refused. He said, “If I’m ever in your situation, I hope you’ll do the same for me.” No doubt I would! Here’s APPLAUSE from a grateful senior citizen.

Dear Linda,

Your Otis Angel is Richard Marquima, another hard worker who puts the customer first, says the company. Dear Pamela, I would like to acknowledge a wonderful and kind employee who works in security at Honolulu International Airport. I am famous for getting lost in parking lots. My husband was leaving on a flight, and a friend volunteered to come along since she knows my sense of direction is very bad. We dropped off my husband to check in and circled back around to park the car. Somehow we ended up in the international parking lot. We were at Gate 50 and needed to get to Gate 8. We went to the next parking lot and got lost once again! We were totally frustrated as we left my husband with his bags, and English is his second language. There was no one around until Monty from security came to our rescue on his 10-speed bike. He was so calm. He told us to turn around and follow him. He even took the time to explain what floor to park on so we could go straight to the terminal. He was so pleasant and helpful!

We were so relieved and offered him a small token of our appreciation, and he refused, saying, “It is all in the course of my job!” What a hero and a sweetheart! He is a good example of what the Aloha Spirit is.

Honolulu International security chief Maj. Alex Nobriga says Monte Ludington’s assistance is exactly what is expected of employees. “We rely on aloha probably more than other airport. We train for aloha when we help the public.”
