Giving Kids A Certificate Of Love

As parents we buy things for our kids and tell them we love them. Still, there is that other, very beautiful feeling that comes when we receive formal recognition.
Ever since my children were 10 and 12 we have made up little award certificates saying, “Because you———. And the love you have shared———- We, your Mother and Father, This date—wish to commend you for your unselfish love.” We made a little ceremony of it, presenting each child with a certificate. My wife took pictures. The first time my son had tears coming out of his eyes. My daughter just clutched hers very tightly. I never expected such a profound response from them!
This world could use a lot more honest thank yous!

On behalf of all the parents on Lusitana Street (in between Queen’s Hospital and the H-1 freeway on Punchbowl), I want to express our deepest gratitude to the people responsible for the small park built in an open space right next to the freeway. Before the park was built, children in our neighborhood played on the sidewalks and on the streets. But since it was opened about two weeks ago, everyone has been playing there, either playing dodgeball or just hanging out with their friends. It’s really great to know that there are people out there who care about our children. Such people deserve a huge applause. Thank you so much.

The temperature in Minnesota this morning is minus-10 degrees as I write to you about my angel. Lisa D. of Kailua left me a message on my answering machine that sent my praises to heaven and to all honest people on earth. My wife and I had just returned from a wonderful 10-day trip to Oahu. Our last day, however, was spent searching for my lost billfold, with no luck. We had to fly home that night and me with no ID, no money nor Visa card. We made it back to Minnesota, but I dreaded the task of replacing all the contents and feared the possibility of identity theft. At home, I had a phone message, returned the call and Lisa D. had found my billfold.
She mailed it with all the contents intact. All I know is that she is a college student living in Kailua and she’s my hero.

Lisa Dibianco says it was actually her friend Kristin Dameron who found your wallet. “I was about to pick her up at Times Kailua and she said, “Look what I just found.” We looked through it and then called directory assistance for his number. I’m glad his vacation ended happily!”
