Dear Pamela,
I just wanted to express my thanks to Ruby Takara, who found my wallet and reported it immediately to the police. I had just filled gas at a self-serve station in Kaimuki, not realizing that I left my wallet on the roof of my car. As I took off for my destination via the H-1 on ramp near Waialae, Ruby spotted my wallet with some contents flying out of it. She took the time and trouble to pick it up and return it. She even cared enough to call me afterward to be sure that it was returned safe and sound. I just wanted to voice my heartfelt thanks to Ruby Takara. She really made a difference! Much mahalos, Ruby!

Dear Jonathan,
Ruby Takara, a retired construction laborer, says it was raining money on the freeway. “I was going to enter the freeway and saw all this paper flying. I said to myself, ‘I’d better stop, because the person who lost it is going to need help picking this up.’ I saw the wallet and I saw his name and picture. A policeman stopped by, so I gave everything to him. I remembered Jonathan’s name, and gave him a call later to make sure he got all his stuff. If it had happened to me, I would have wanted to someone to collect my belongings, too.”
Dear Pamela,
I was heading toward a Moiliili bus stop and tripped in front of Down to Earth. I am now in a cast for a tear in my Achilles heel and other sore spots. I want to thank the three very Good Samaritans for coming to my aid. They made me comfortable, supplied ice and water. I don’t know their names. One was a musician, another was a woman who offered me a ride home with her three dogs. I didn’t take her up on it, being that I am afraid of dogs. I was dizzy, but she told TheBus driver to wait for me. The driver seemed to sense I wasn’t well and was very thoughtful and caring. I’m most grateful to him.

Dear Wai Hin,
We know your Samaritans are wishing you a speedy recovery. TheBus narrowed down the driver to two men who drive that route: Tavita Faumuna and Yung Fu Tang.
Correction: Regarding last week’s letter from Agnes Toma: Jamie Pestana does indeed work at Kalaheo Park and also does maintenance at Kailua and Aikahi parks. “I put my heart and soul into those areas because that’s where the community goes for recreation,” she says.“Many thanks to all the park users, and especially to Agnes Toma for recognizing the work that all the park workers do.”
“Jamie Pestana is one of our hard-working and dedicated parks maintenance workers,” says Parks and Recreation director Les Chang. “It’s nice when residents notice the good work of our staffs. We will, however, ask Jamie not to use her own funds. Her dedication is plenty - and much appreciated.”
