Good Safety Advice For Hikers

My son recently got lost after taking a wrong turn coming down from a hike to Mt. Kaala as he ran out of daylight.
Luckily he had a flashlight and did find his way back to the trail eventually.
He wisely did get in touch with Search and Rescue. Thank God for cell phones!
I wish to send APPLAUSE to 911 and Search and Rescue crews for their rapid response in locating an exhausted hiker for a happy ending.

Your son was wise to have a cell phone, but HFD Captain Terry Seelig suggests he bring along some other essentials on his next outing.
“We advise hikers to have a plan,” he says. “Know the trail, know your limits. Come up with a ‘point of return’, even if you haven’t finished the hike. Cell phones and flashlights are good, but other signaling devices are valuable, such as whistles and mirrors.
“And of course, have food, water and the right clothing.”

On March 19, HPD’s District IV held its annual Project C.L.E.A.N. on the Windward side.
Although the weather brought many “blessings” to the event, there was a tremendous outpouring of support from the entire community.
Our volunteers included Police Chief Kealoha and Mayor Carlisle, along with more than 300 volunteers who arrived at Kaneohe District Park ready to assist with projects in Kailua, Kaneohe, Waimanalo and Kahaluu.
The Recreation Center in Kailua, the Skate Park in Kaneohe and several locations in Waimanalo received fresh coats of paint to cover graffiti, and we filled three garbage trucks with trash from an abandoned homeless encampment.
The mayor and chief arrived back from the work sites with big smiles and a lot of mud on them.
Windward Neighbor-hood Security Watch Coordinators Group (NSW) would like to thank these businesses who generously donated money, supplies and food in support of this event: City Mill, Enchanted Lake Safeway, Hawaii Nut and Bolt, Home Depot, Kaneohe Ranch, McKenna Ford and Windward Auto.
And to the staff of Midweek Islander, thank you for the great articles in support of this and other NSW events.
We cannot do events like this without you and all of the volunteers who give back to our Windward Community.

Dear Pamela,
I was on my way to a luncheon when my station wagon slowed and came to a dead stop at 18th and Pahoa avenues.
Three men in a Lincoln Aviator turned their car around to assist me in getting my car out of traffic.
One of the men also loaned me his cell phone so I could call for road assistance.
I am so grateful to these kind men: Carlos, John and Bryan. They refused my offer to reward them for their service. May good things come their way.
