Good Sports Help The Homeless

We’d like to thank Sports Authority and MidWeek for their generous donation of camping equipment to the City of Joy church in Nanakuli outreach program. The camping equipment was used as prizes at our luncheon that was provided by Ko Olina and presented to the needy and homeless by volunteers of the many churches on the Waianae Coast as well as other churches from different parts of Oahu.
Your generosity met some of the basic and necessary needs for the less fortunate who live on the beach and lack the kind of shelter that so many of us take for granted. The smiles of gratitude and excitement at receiving such “prizes” was so humbling to behold for the volunteers who were blessed to serve these special people.
We appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity. We pray that others will be positively affected by your actions to consider those less fortunate.

MidWeek was pleased to be involved, but the credit really goes to Sports Authority,” says editor Don Chapman. “When Sports Authority offered MidWeek a $500 gift certificate to be used for a charity, the choice was simple: the City of Joy church in Nanakuli outreach program for homeless folks living on the beach, in which Katie Nakanishi of the MidWeek, Star-Bulletin accounting office is active. Katie and I went shopping at the newly renovated and expanded Sports Authority on Ward, and with the assistance of district manager Ben Arita and store manager Chris Martinez purchased tents, sleeping bags, coolers, water jugs and backpacks.”
“We like what City of Joy Church represents,” says Arita. “They help the people who need it the most. Even though the economy is down, we’re doing pretty well. So to share that with the community is an outstanding opportunity.”

Over the holidays, Ann Pearl Nursing Home had a wonderful dinner for the residents and family members. Many of these residents can’t go out to eat at a restaurant or at home. The hardworking staff and volunteers made this time memorable: the ono food, entertainment and decorations. The smiles on these patients’faces, just to be with their children and grandkids, were the best gift anyone could have. Mahalo to all the Ann Pearl staff and volunteers.

“It is certainly rewarding when residents and families feel so compelled to share their feelings about our services,” says Johhna Johnson, administrator of Ann Pearl Nursing Facility, an entity of Ohana Pacific Management Company. “The staff provides the highest quality of care and services. Although everyone would like to be home with their loved ones during the holidays, that is not an option for some. So APNF brings the spirit of the season to the facility and allows all to partake of the music, food, fun and fellowship. We are pleased to have such caring staff and applaud the activities and dietary staff in particular for this wonderful event. We are honored to provide the care and services needed by our kupuna.”
