After taking Betty, my neighbor who doesn’t drive, shopping, we started to unload the items from her cart into the back of my car. The problem was, how was I to lift the pack of 20 plastic bottles of vitamin water from the cart into the car? Betty noticed a young man loading his car so she asked for his help. With a pleasant smile, he came to the cart and lifted the pack with ease. We both thanked him for coming to the rescue.

Chris Kaufman is grateful for the opportunity to lend a hand. “I was in the parking lot at my truck,” he says. “The ladies were just across the way and it was obvious that case of water was way too heavy for them. I enjoy helping people. I’m a carpenter right now, but I’m going to school to be a nurse. Helping people is my motivation in life.”

Our daughter-in-law’s van died on busy Maunakea Street. A young man named Samson enlisted the help of another passer-by and together they pushed the van into a parking lot. My wife offered Samson a See’s candy certificate, but he refused. He said he was happy to help. Walking back to the car, we noticed Samson giving something to the other young man. Turns out he wouldn’t have helped unless Samson gave him “something.” Stark contrast between two young men, don’t you agree?

I do. We attempted to track down Samson at his work place, Ecolab, but there was no local number and the company only knows of one Samson, who lives in Kentucky. He may have refused a reward but he has the satisfaction of knowing he did the right thing.

A big mahalo to a Good Samaritan who found my Palm PDA/phone at the Makaha Resort and turned it in to the hotel. His actions ensured a safe return of the phone and its contents to me. Because of this second chance and lesson learned, I was able to secure and delete the incredible amount of confidential information contained in it.
