Helping Cyclist Hit By A Car

My 16-year-old daughter was riding her bicycle home from marching band practice at Mililani High School when a driver hit her on her bike in a crosswalk.
Thankfully the bike sustained most of the physical damage and my daughter was unhurt except for being very shaken up. She called me and I rushed to her as soon as possible not knowing what had happened.
The driver stopped, but my daughter was upset and didn’t want to talk to him and mistakenly sent him on his way.
When I arrived, a lovely lady named Cleo was waiting with my daughter. Cleo explained that she had been out for her evening run when she came upon my daughter crying on the side of the road. Cleo helped her to get the damaged bike across the street and stayed with her until I arrived and helped her to stay calm.
Mothers never stop worrying about their children especially when they are out of sight.
It is a comfort to know that there are wonderful caring people out there like Cleo who care about the other guy. A big mahalo, Cleo. You were my daughter’s guardian angel at that moment.

Dear Janet,
Your daughter’s incident is becoming all too common since many drivers are looking out for pedestrians in a crosswalk and may not be prepared to react to a bicycle coming up alongside.
Since we don’t know the details of the accident, HPD can only suggest that both drivers and bicyclists observe caution in intersections. Hawaii traffic laws require drivers to cede the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks and all bicycle operators must obey the rules for traffic control signals and signs applicable to vehicles.
