I was involved in a two-car crash at the corner of Koko Head and Harding avenues. The loud impact brought out the minister of nearby Kaimuki Christian Church, along with his wife and son to investigate. Pastor Nofo and Marie Eletise showed much compassion. The front of my car was totaled and had to be towed, and when I could not contact my family, the reverend and his wife drove my friend to her home nearby and delivered me to my doorstep in Hawaii Kai, where they also happen to live.
As a Buddhist, I’d like to think of them as my bodhisattvas. My Christian friends may think of them as angels.
I humbly thank Pastor Nofo and Marie Eletise and their son for their true aloha spirit. I’d also like to thank the fire rescue squad and policemen for their quick and efficient service.

“Shortly after our Sunday service we heard a loud noise,” says Pastor Nofo Eletise of Kaimuki Christian Church. “The two ladies were still in the car when we got to the intersection. We called the ambulance and tow truck. One of the ladies couldn’t get hold of her daughter, and HPD would not take them home, so it was no problem for us. One lady lived right there in Kaimuki, the other in Hawaii Kai, where we live. My wife, Marie, and son Michael are happy they are doing well.”

A few weeks ago at the dedication of Pacific Aviation Museum’s new Navy dive bomber, I fainted. There were many helpful people who came to my aid, including the wonderful care I received from the Ford Island Fire Department and the ambulance team from Pearl Harbor submarine base, but there were two special ladies, Donna and Mary, whom I did not know and who both held my hands, spoke in a firm, but friendly tone and were absolutely angels of mercy. I wondered how I could tell these ladies “thank you,” and I just saw your column, and hopefully they will know how much their calm reassurance helped me get my bearings.

Dear Pat,
Full-time Pacific Aviation Museum volunteer Mary Cosper gives all the credit to a dedicated team of staff members. “This was not the first time this has happened,” she says. “We’ve dealt with many situations of illness and fainting in the past. That’s why we’re there, to help the people who visit the museum.”
