My mother, an elderly senior citizen, was crossing the street at Beretania and Maunakea streets in Chinatown when she was hit by a bicyclist running the red light. The impact was so great she was thrown in the air and left unconscious on the road. The cyclist proceeded to get back on his bike and rode away without giving aid or acknowledging his wrongdoing as he eluded people’s attempt to stop him. My mother was hospitalized with a fractured leg.
Pedestrians nearby gave aid to my mother and summoned a police officer to the scene.
Unfortunately, we do not know who these kind-hearted people were, and we wanted to express our gratitude for their help and hope they read your column as faithfully as we do.

Dear Pamela,
I had a flat tire on the street leading to Moanalua Road across from Aiea High School. I called AAA, but in the meantime several men offered help. The first young man was parked in the school lot, walked across the yard and three lanes of the highway. He offered to change my tire, but I declined because he was in his work clothes. A second man also offered help. I neglected to get their names, unfortunately.
Motorcycle Officer Manog stopped and changed my tire after I had been waiting for 45 minutes for AAA. I would like to thank all the men. May they be as richly blessed in 2008.

Dear Pamela,
I need to commend HPD’s finest for assisting me and four members of the Bell family when our car was stalled on a Punaluu road. Sgt. Hawkins was off duty heading home to Kaaawa when he turned around to help us. I wish Sgt. Hawkins and family a happy, safe new year.
