Dear Pamela,

A few weeks ago, after completing shopping at Hawaii Kai Costco, we returned to our car to find a summons ticket. We had parked in a handicapped space and forgot to display our placard. Since we were on private property (Hawaii Kai Towne Center), we wondered why the ticket was City and County.

Placard and ticket in hand, we spoke with a Costco security manager and found that handicap spaces, even on private property, can be monied by the city. The fine was over $200 and a court appearance was mandatory. A court appearance would have imposed a great hardship on us since my husband (91) was facing the possibility of surgery soon. Since we wished to get a clarification, the Costco security manager escorted us to the police sub-station at the other end of the complex and left us with Officer Tsukano, who noted our distress and put us immediately at ease. Noting we had the placard and ID, he provided us with the necessary information to relieve a truly stressful situation. Our day was saved by a caring police officer! Much APPLAUSE to him.

Dear Pamela,

Recently my husband and I had a frightening experience. We were on our way to the bank at Ala Moana Center when my husband unknowingly dropped the envelope with checks and savings bank book.

We would like to thank the woman who found the envelope, and Officer Cary Okimoto, who took the time to locate my daughter and deliver the envelope to her, everything intact. Many, many thanks and God bless you both.

Dear Yasutabes and Miyasatos,

“Lt. Cary Okimoto and Sgt. Andrew Tsukano are exemplary officers who are known to go the extra mile,” says Maj. Clayton Kau. “They are two of Honolulu’s finest. Also, mahalo to the public for taking the time to write in or call. Our officers really appreciate it.”
