Aloha, Pamela,

I was walking alone early around the 3-mile loop of Enchanted Lake in Kailua the other morning and noticed a compact silver car making a U-turn in the middle of the road. He pulled up alongside the curb, in the direction that I was headed. The driver waited until I was alongside to ask for directions to the Marine base. I thought for a moment and gave him the easiest route that I could think of. As I started to walk away, the driver asked to clarify the directions. At that time, a jogger came between me and the car and asked if I was all right. The driver left and I thanked the jogger for stopping.

I continued my walk and contemplated what had just happened. The driver could have really been lost, or I might have been putting myself in harm’s way.

Lesson learned here is although there are many people who are out walking and jogging early in the morning, and although I make it a point to be aware of my surroundings, I will not stop to talk to strangers (hmmm ... isn’t this what we tell our children?).

Mahalo to the jogger for being a concerned good Samaritan!

Dear Karen,

Here are some tips for pedestrians and joggers from HPD Kaneohe station commander Maj. Kenneth Simmons:

* Run with a partner.

* Stay in highly trafficked areas.

* Wear reflective clothing and carry a whistle to alert others.

* If a car seems suspicious, note the license number and call 911 immediately.

Dear Pamela,

We are writing about Linda Guess, who we consider to be the longtime “face of Easter Seals.” Unfortunately she is no longer an Easter Seals employee. Our family benefited from quality after-school and respite services for over 15 years while Linda was director of Youth Services at Easter Seals. On behalf of other participants and their families, we acknowledge and sincerely thank Linda Guess. Her invaluable contributions, supportive presence and positive energy will not be forgotten.

Dear Melvin and Karen,

“What a wonderful letter,” says Easter Seals president and CEO John Howell. “The Youth Services program is one of 23 Easter Seals programs statewide. We continue to be committed to providing these vital services to the community.”

(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
