Kahuku Stars On And Off The Field

My wife and I were driving some friends from Chicago to Turtle Bay when we got a flat tire in Laie. We pulled off the road, raised the trunk lid to get the jack and spare when an SUV pulled up and stopped on the shoulder near us. Five, possibly six young men piled out of the van and took over - jacking up the car, removing the flat, putting the spare on, then putting everything back in the trunk. They directed traffic around us. One of them went to borrow a needed tool from one of the houses near us.
During all this, a man in a truck stopped and put out some traffic cones. He mentioned that these helpful, courteous young men were members of the championship Kahuku football team. We want to thank the man in the truck and the Kahuku players - true champions in more ways than one. This renews our faith in mankind!

Kahuku football coach Reggie Torres is proud of his boys on and off the field. “I was told the couple from Chicago had a few bad experiences while visiting Hawaii, but this was a big positive.” The team members who assisted you that day were Anthony Siilata, Benji Kemoeatu, Pelefomi Soliai, A.J. Atuaia and Lehi Aumua.
Dear Pamela,
I had nearly passed out from dehydration one afternoon on Wilder Avenue near Punahou School. A lovely woman came by and asked if I needed help. She comforted me, and when a bus approached she asked the driver to call 911. This lady offered me water and poured some over my neck to cool me. Then another lady came along and provided an umbrella to keep the sun off me. She told me how to breathe in and out slowly to the count of five.
Both ladies stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. I am sorry to say I was too sick to even see their faces, much less get their names. I want to relay my mahalo to both of them through APPLAUSE. Their help was so needed!

Dear Pamela,
I want to thank Sharla and Anthony Lee of Wahiawa. I didn’t realize it until I got home that I lost my wallet. There was a message on my phone saying they had found my wallet and were trying to get a hold of me. They personally delivered my wallet. They were strangers who showed honesty, kindness and caring. They are now my wonderful friends whom I will cherish for the rest of my life. Mahalo, and God bless you both.

Dear Violet,
Anthony Lee, a substance abuse counselor at the Sand Island Treatment Center, and his wife, Sharla, who works for the U.S. Defense Department, were in the right place at the right time. “We were driving to Sharla’s parents house for dinner,” says Anthony. “We saw something in the middle of the road in our lane. We turned around, picked up the wallet, checked for ID, then left a message for Violet. I thought it might have been stolen, but thank goodness everything was in it. Violet was really stressed out when we met her. I’m glad we were able to help. She’s a real sweet lady.”
