Dear Pamela,
I just wanted to give a great big APPLAUSE to the Kaimuki Christian School staff, and fellow chaperones and the fourth-grade class students who went up to the Big Island during the tsunami that struck Kona. We had to evacuate our hotel and move to higher ground.
P.E. teacher Elliot Seria’s uncle, Uncle Moki, and their aunt, Aunty Debbie, displayed the aloha spirit by opening up their home to us for breakfast - all 50 of us. Uncle and Aunty said the last time they had a party that big over it was a wedding! But they were gracious enough to take us in. Vice principal Ulu Seria also did a wonderful job ofcalming down crying children.
Mr. Steve Kaji and Mr. Sean Okamoto, the two fourth-grade teachers, displayed excellent leadership. Not only were the Kaimuki Christian School children following Mr. Kaji’s orders, but other evacuees started following us too! Elliot Seria also made sure the children were safe while sleeping. He was a good bouncer. Ryan Kuoha stayed up almost all night watching our luggage.

Kaimuki
Dear Jody,
“It was a great team effort,” says vice principal ulu seria. “everyone chipped in to keep the students occupied and safe. i, too, must express gratitude to uncle and Aunty. They not only provided breakfast, but gave the kids pillows and blankets for warmth. i don’t know how they had so many blankets. They kept pulling them out of the closet and handing them out, like loaves and fishes in the Bible!”
Dear Pamela,
Field officers Mr. Ling and Ms. Thom from the Hawaiian Humane Society came to help me rescue a cat that was stuck in Palolo Stream. It was dark, raining and the stream water was rising. The cat would not budge.
When I called the Humane Society, Ms. Thom answered the call and in no time she and Mr. Ling arrived. They deserve big APPLAUSE for their professional and sincere effort to help a cat in a dire situation. I’m glad to say it all ended well. Thank you, Mr. Ling and Ms. Thom and the Hawaiian Humane Society.

Palolo
Dear Terence,
Vernon ling and Cori Thom are two of the dozen investigators at the Hawaiian Humane society. “They take 18,000 calls a year, with 2,000 of them emergency rescues like this one,” says starr Dods of HHs. “This is why we work here, for love of animals. Whenever we can save an animal’s life, it makes all the effort worthwhile.”
Dear Pamela,
Accolades to Christopher Quisano, the 27-year-old driver of TheBus No. 675. His Kahala Mall route bus No. 1 stopped to pick up an elderly lady burdened with three shopping bags. He got up from the driver’s seat to help her with her bags. He did the same when she got off the bus.
This young man had the right upbringing. Honor him in your APPLAUSE column, if you will.
Michael Augusta
Kahala
Dear Michael,
This is not the first time driver Christopher Quisano has been recognized for service to his TheBus passengers. A copy of your letter is now a part of his commendation file.
