Lending A Hand In The Fast Lane

I just wanted to thank the man who helped push me out of the tunnel last week Wednesday during the morning traffic. He was kind enough to stop and offer his assistance where I had stalled in the fast lane. I did not get a chance to get his name or license plate with everything going on. It’s good to see there are good people who are willing to lend a hand.

For the past few years, a section of Ewa by Gentry has enjoyed an anti-litter campaign waged by a one-man volunteer force. This older gentleman incorporates this with his morning walk. He creatively uses long tongs to gather litter from the sidewalks and gutters, so as not to strain his back, I assume. I think his contribution merits an “APPLAUSE” note. And if all of us followed his example of picking up litter while we walk, our neighborhoods would be so much cleaner!

I had a very bad fall on Queen Street, close to my apartment house. You know how there’s often a difference in height where the sidewalk and the grass area come together? I stepped just right on the “difference” area and turned my right ankle, sending me knees first onto the cement. Then my forehead hit. I was lying there rather confused when a car with a family backed up and a woman asked if I needed help. She got out of the car, picked me up and gathered my belongings for me.
But here is why I’m bothering to write. The car that stopped also included a little girl. In most cases, parents like to communicate their moral values, but the child hears only “wah-wah-wah.” This little girl will remember all her life that her parents backed up the car to assist an old lady, and it will probably become her norm of conduct.
