Let’s Honor Our American Women

Dear Pamela,
As a member of the male gender, I am one of the foremost supporters of the American woman. I give APPLAUSE to their many accomplishments, sacrifices, sufferings and stress from the American Revolution to the present, where they are now giving life and limb for their country.
My wife and I welcomed home some National Guardsmen and women at Kalaeloa recently. We observed the many wives and children there who had waited at home while their husbands and fathers were deployed. In some cases it was the wives who were deployed. In World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War, women have also faced hardship and sacrifice.
Right now a woman is second in command at the U.S. Naval Academy. Maj. Gen. Pollack, formerly of Tripler Army Medical Center, is now head of Walter Reed Medical Center. There are 64 women combat pilots in the U.S. Air Force, two of them named as part of the Thunderbird team.
Former Hawaii resident Tammy Duckworth, a double amputee in the Iraq war, is director of veterans’ affairs in Illinois.
Between 1990 and 2000, the number of women veterans increased 33 percent. It’s projected by 2010, women will comprise more than 10 percent of the veteran population.
The American woman ... you give of yourself to others all day long. You help, comfort, encourage and support family and friends. You manage your life and all its details. And now it’s time for you.
My dream is to see a national monument built in Washington, D.C., to honor the American woman. Currently, the only such recognition n our nation’s capital is a small monument to two nurses who served in the Vietnam War. I’ve been writing to national, state, business and military leaders for two years. This proposal needs some new energy and I hope the readers of APPLAUSE can provide that. To see this happen we need a united effort. Mahalo!

Note to Leslie Ann Depew (APPLAUSE Sept. 19) from a reader:
I began having panic attacks about 25 years ago and I have discovered that magnesium supplements will alleviate or eliminate panic disorder. Please do not take my word for it. Research magnesium yourself (and talk to your doctor!) Please feel free to e-mail me through APPLAUSE.
(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
