I would like to express my gratitude to Michael W. Perry from KSSK for his help in rescuing me and my friends in Kaneohe Bay. We were hoping for a fun day out on the bay, but next thing we knew our engine died in the middle of the bay We flagged down someone in a sailboat, who did a ton of work just to maneuver close enough to talk to us (I wish I could find out who that family was also). They went to the Kaneohe Yacht Club to find someone who could give us a hand. Soon Michael Perry was driving out and towing us back to land. I would like to thank Michael and the owner of the sailboat for their kindness and taking the time out of their day to help us.

This is the fifth such rescue for Michael W. Perry, who makes up a naval posse all by himself. “My daughter, my 2-year-old grandson and I went for a boat ride that day,” he says. “We had already tied off and cleaned up when someone came up and said there was a boat in trouble. The wind was way up and blowing their boat around. We went back out and towed them in. I’ve been rescued once, too, and I can tell you it gets pretty lonely out there when you need help and no one is around. We were happy to do it. I let my grandson do all the navigating ... naaa, just kidding.”

I manage two libraries in Honolulu public housing. We have a very limited budget and without the help of our donors and volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to operate.
The Elks Honolulu Lodge 616 donated brand new dictionaries for each of our participants. The staff, faculty and students of Holy Families Catholic Academy donated backpacks, school supplies, slippers and books. Bess Press donated several boxes of brand new books for both libraries; and Barnes & Noble at Ala Moana helped us with a fundraiser that earned more than $1,000 for our program.
Every week we have donors and volunteers drop off snacks, art supplies, bookshelves and books for our families. And every week I am humbled by my community’s ability to keep on giving in these rough economic times. Please help me thank all the donors and volunteers who have dedicated their time, resources and energy to the betterment of Honolulu’s children growing up in public housing.

Dear Tamara,
Buddy Bess, publisher of Bess Press, says the Family Literacy Program was a good fit for his company. “I met with Tamara and saw how she turned an empty room into a free library,” he says. “We donated a number of books that I thought would be appropriate for the kids, including three of our most-popular books: the biography of Iz, The Perfect Season and Hawaii Warrior Football .
One of the easiest things we can do is donate books, and we’ve done so to Tamara’s program, the Heart Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, Alu Like and many more.”
