‘MidWeek’ Photog Gets Bag Back

I lost my backpack at Kaneohe Yacht Club with all my personal information, gift cards, cash, camera, phone and more belongings. I basically spend the next few days canceling cards, renewing my drivers license and various other inconveniences. Much to my surprise, I received an email from Heath Van Tol, who found it washed up by Kaneohe beach park. He was fishing with his cousin when he saw my floating bag. This angel cleaned my bag and belongings and returned it to me with all of its contents. Many mahalos to him and congratulations to the people who raised this young man of integrity.

Heath Van Tol, who’s finishing up school to join the Marines, says you made his day when you picked up your bag. “It just washed up on shore and looked like it had been adrift for a while, ” he says. “I looked inside and found her contact information taped to the back of her cell phone. She was so happy to get it back. It was a happy moment for everybody.”

I think that TheHandiVan drivers are the best people that the disabled come across in a day. They are not only professional in their demeanor, but they take the time to treat each passenger with extra TLC. I was recently picked up by TheHandi-Van driver named Alan who immediately grabbed my belongings and helped get them on the van, then securely strapped me into my seat before taking me home. I realize that they do not have to aid the passenger with their belongings, but most of them choose to because they realize that a disabled person may have trouble. It had apparently been a long night for Alan, who picked me up about 11 p.m. and I was his last ride for the night. Despite his long day, he was cheerful and very pleasant. I have been riding TheHandi-Van for more than 20 years now, and realize that the praises I have for Alan are true for most of the other TheHandiVan drivers. I love the service they provide, from the operator who takes the calls to everyone who is instrumental in making TheHandi-Van work like clockwork. A big shoutout to you all.

“All of our employees love their work,” says TheHandi-Van vice president of paratransit services John Black. “They have the heart and compassion to do the job. We take a special note in the hiring process because we look for a special type of person. Driver Alan Sablan has heart, as do all our employees.”
