Dear Pamela,
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Henry Hanalei Ramirez at Salon 808 for the kind and generous treatment he showed my wife last week. She is a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy and was losing her hair. We were recommended to Henry by Tripler Hospital, and he not only shaved what hair she had left, but he also gave her a wig and took the time to cut and style the wig so she could wear it out of the salon. It was a rather emotional time for my wife, and by the time he finished he turned what were tears into smiles. When we stopped by the cashier to pay, we were told there was no charge.
It really helps to know that compassion and empathy for others is alive and well as displayed by this unique man.

Dear Rick and Wendy,
Yours is not the first expression of gratitude for Hanalei’s kindness and generosity.
As a breast-cancer survivor myself, I’ve recommended his services to many women facing this emotional challenge. Hanalei is a well-known stylist who can charge a lot of money for his artistry, but a big portion of his workweek is devoted to cancer patients. He has been doing this for 15 years.
“And yet I still have a lot to learn,” he says. “When someone goes through something like that, they have to regain self-esteem. That alone can give them the energy to fight this thing with dignity.”
Hi Pamela,
Last year my husband was transferred to Hawaii for his job, and my daughter and I moved here to join him last summer. We have lived in many places: Texas, Louisiana, Maryland, West Virginia, Missouri and Pennsylvania. I have never had what happened to me in Kailua, not once but twice in a few weeks, happen anywhere else. I lost the keychain, with the only key to our SUV and also my house key on it, in the parking lot of Macy’s. Some honest person or employee of Teddy’s Bigger Burgers found the keys and took them into the restaurant, where they were returned to me. I am very grateful to whomever that person is.
Afew days later I was shopping at Safeway on Hamakua Drive and somehow my watch slipped off my arm. I called immediately, but it hadn’t been found. A few days later I went in to customer service and a very nice lady brought it out to me after questioning, as again an honest employee or customer had turned it in. It was a gift from my husband and I had been very upset to have lost it. It was not a cheap watch either. I just wanted to thank the honest person at Safeway also who found and turned in my lost item. This says a lot about the character of people on this island.

Dear Dott,
“Our lost and found desk is very diligent when we find items, which is just about every day,” says Millie Yamada at the Kailua Safeway customer service booth. ” If there’s an ID, we try to call the owner. If not, we put the item in our safe.”
