Quietly Helping Out A Neighbor

Sylvia Lum is my neighbor and a generous-to-a-fault Christian person. Recently, I completed a contract at Tripler Army Medical Center. Rather than going to the Mainland, I frantically sent out resumes and completed endless online applications.
Apparently my age created the illusion I am not the best candidate for positions as an RN or nurse practitioner. I have been practicing for more than 35 years and have excellent references.
Anyway, finding a job was difficult and I was having trouble making ends meet.
My neighbor recognized this and gently left food and other necessities at my doorstep unlabeled and unmarked.
Once I identified who my unknown benefactor was, she offered to assist me with a month’s rent so I would not contribute to the homeless population. Thankfully I am currently gainfully employed and will reimburse her ASAP.
Ms. Lum has a habit of feeding the poor, assisting the homeless and even drives people around in her spare time.
In today’s society where it’s everyone for him/herself, this is truly a rare thing.
So I wanted to say thank you to Ms. Lum for being a truly kind and caring person. Ms. Lum is not wealthy. She lives a conservative life and never calls attention to her good deeds.
So I wish to acknowledge her contributions to society and this beautiful state.

“All my neighbors are my friends,” she says. “Aren’t you supposed to take care of your neighbors? I get something from them back, you know: friendship and gratitude.”

I am writing in response to the recent letter from Mary Bern (MidWeek Nov. 3).
It is a wonderful feeling to rescue a baby bird, or any bird in distress, especially when this effort is supported by the community.
Wild Bird Rehab Haven (WBRH), referred to in the letter, is an independent nonprofit that rehabilitates Hawaii’s wild birds under a state permit for introduced species of birds.
The rehabbers at WBRH help birds when we are contacted by the public at our phone helpline (447-9274) or through our website (wildbirdrehabhaven.org).
We at WBRH are more than happy to help the birds if people contact us directly.
