Note: Last year Michael W. Perry was the recipient of some APPLAUSE after coming to the rescue of boaters in distress. Now here’s his letter.
Hi Pamela,
What comes around, goes around. The Perry Navy was itself rescued Sunday. Great day at the sand bar, we leave at 4 p.m. and the engine sounds funny ... I look in the engine compartment and we are taking on the entire Pacific Ocean. We bailed water furiously and hobbled into Heeia Kea Pier, beached on the sand so we would-n’t sink, and were greeted by the Kaneohe Canoe Club women paddlers ... the same club that was in our KSSK audience at John Dominis the day before!
I rigged a temporary repair to prevent us from sinking, but the engine was shot, so Sandra from the club arranged for a tow back to Kaneohe Yacht Club in John’s boat. And now all is well, except for when I finally see the repair bill! Thanks, Kaneohe Canoe Club! It’s good to know there is somebody out there on K-Bay when you get that “sinking feeling.”

Kaneohe
Dear Mike,
“We were in the right place at the right time,” says Sandra Kalahiki, vice president of and paddler with Kaneohe Canoe Club. “A friend of mine, John Barboo, was there with his boat “Free Spool.” He towed Mr. Perry’s boat to Kaneohe Yacht Club right in front of all the girls of the hale. They say you never leave a boater behind, and that’s basically what we did.”
Dear Pamela,
I would like to thank a few gentlemen who helped my mother and me when our car’s battery died in front of Savers on Dillingham. My mother is in a wheelchair, and I had just picked her up in the front of the store when I found that my car would not start again. I didn’t know what to do, so I took a chance and went into Savers to see if anyone could possibly help me. Sure enough, three young men took the time out from their jobs to help me. I am so thankful to Nicolai, Paul and Edgar for going above and beyond the call of duty. There also was a man named Larry who happened to be walking by, and he stopped to help also. You all made my day and warmed my heart. It’s so nice to know there are people out there who will take the time out to help a stranger. Much mahalo.

Dear Joye,
Your Savers employees who saved your day were sales associates Nicolai Villones, a student at Honolulu Community College, and Paul Mamligot and Edgar Esperamcilla, both seniors at Farrington High School. “It was no problem for us,” says Nicolai. “We were happy to have the opportunity to help out.”
