Saluting A Dedicated Docent

I took two WWII veterans, both retired Navy admirals, to the Pacific Aviation Museum, Ford Island, for a special event commemorating the Battle of Midway. I asked the receptionist if a knowledgeable docent were available to give these gentlemen a good tour. She pointed out one young man who was soaking wet - he had just returned from assisting a visitor outdoors in the pouring rain. However, he was happy to give our trio an outstanding tour.
“Kurt” has a vast store of knowledge about each of the exhibits, so much that at times he seems able to come up with trivia. He was fantastic - not your average volunteer tour docent at a museum. Special kudos and APPLAUSE to Kurt - docent extraordinaire. And I highly recommend this museum to our kamaaina, currently highlighting aviation aspects of the attack on Pearl Harbor. You can “fly” a simulator, or perhaps learn why Issei/Nisei families were isolated in camps during WWII. Mahalo.

Pacific Aviation Museum volunteer coordinator Katherine “K.T.” Jones says Kurt Redinger volunteers whenever he can, despite having full-time responsibilities in the Air Force.
“Kurt is one of about 100 volunteers who do everything from putting planes together to conducting tours,” she says. “We are so fortunate to have very dedicated volunteers who have a passion for the history.”

Please give APPLAUSE to all the staff at Kainalu Elementary School for everybody’s hard work! The teachers are always there for the students. My fellow custodians are there to make sure the school and grounds are clean. The cafeteria staff put in long hours preparing the school lunches. A big mahalo to all.

Principal Sheri Sunabe returns your pat on the back. “John is on the substitute custodian list, so he’s not here every day, but it’s so nice for him to think of us,” she says. “You can always count on him. When he notices something amiss, like someone’s car with a flat tire ... or a light that’s gone out, he’ll notify us, even if that’s not his direct responsibility. We can always count on him and we’re grateful for that.”

I had a diabetic episode at the Hawaii Kai Safeway. A truly caring produce employee, Keoki, was my guardian angel. He helped me and watched over me to make sure that I was OK. All this he did with true aloha. Please let him know how very grateful I am and that I look forward to seeing him in the produce department again.

Keoki Pinao says hanging around his diabetic uncle gave him the clues on your condition. “She came up to me and asked for something sweet to eat. I recognized the signs. She looked ready to pass out. So I cut up some pieces of orange. I’m glad we reacted before something serious happened.”
