We would like to send APPLAUSE to Caroline, Janet and Dawleen, employees at the Taco Bell on Beretania Street, for their assistance. After receiving our order we were unable to shift our car out of “park.” Not only did these three wonderful women offer a cell phone and phone book to call a tow truck, they helped push our car out of the drive-thru. We were very fortunate to have met three caring individuals. Mahalo nui loa. Caroline, Janet and Dawleen!

Recently I left to join our grandchildren and families in New Hampshire.
I planned to prepare lau-lau for our reunion dinner, but forgot to bring the recipe from my 3660 On the Rise Cookbook by Russell Siu. Despite my search directions, my husband could not find the recipe in our Hawaii home. He called 3660 on the Rise to ask for help. He received a return from Russell himself. He dictated the recipe to my husband and then said “if you have any questions, please call me.” Thanks to the personal involvement of one of Hawaii’s premier chefs my New Hampshire ohana enjoyed a wonderful lau-lau meal. Mahalo nui loa to Russell Siu.

Russell Siu is happy you were able to show your Mainland relatives a real local-style repast. “Her husband called and explained the situation,” he says. “No problem. I just got back from New Hampshire last fall and I knew they’d be able to find most of the ingredients ... and if not, any white fish and spinach would do.”

Our family would like to give APPLAUSE to these people who helped our mom when she fell in front of Kuakini Hospital: the kind and quick-thinking motorist who stopped and pressed a blouse to Mom’s head, the security guard who wheeled her to Emergency, and the Emergency staff who cared for her.

“It was a team effort,” says Kuakini head of security, Steven Pang. “We were all concerned about Mrs. Tamura.” Leading the assistance were security officer Kenton Takata, Eddie Agno of transport services and Larry Wong from communications. The ER attending physician was Dr. Cassandra Sanchez, assisted by nurse Tavy Sakbun and ER tech Dennis Josiah.
