Sharing Aloha With Strangers

Dear Pamela,
I took my granddaughter for a stroller ride, for which I had to go uphill. When returning home, downhill, the stroller started to turn toward the street. I panicked and jerked the stroller, and that is when I fell and hit my head on the curb. I was bleeding profusely. Thank God cars stopped and people came to my aid. Someone called the ambulance. Someone had ice cubes in a baggie. Someone even called my sister to let her know what happened. I didn’t get their names, but will forever remember the kind deeds they rendered to me. Mahalo to all of them!

Dear Pamela,
We were picnicking at Magic Island with family during a surf contest. The parking lot was blocked off, so we walked a long way with all our supplies. After reaching there we were offered to sit under the canopy of the family of Clyde Akau. They had a son surfing that day. As we packed to leave, I left one of my bags with my wallet inside. They tracked me down and I turned around from Aiea to head back to Ala Moana. By this time no one was allowed to enter the park by car. Clyde biked all the way to the entrance of the park by Atkinson Drive to meet us. There is no more aloha than that. Their family was hospitable during the event, then went many extra steps to return my bag. We appreciate this greatly.

Dear Pamela,
The brave witnesses who went to the aid of a stabbing victim did our Honolulu community a great service. They saw a fight near Cartwright Neighborhood Park in Makiki and tried to stop the violence. They deserve an award for standing up and trying to stop another vicious death. They certainly did their part to make our community safer. Unfortunately, the victim died later that night.
If we want our community safer, we have to do something, sometimes as simple as calling 911. These good citizens are a real example of how we can live aloha. Thank you so much.

Dear Carolyn, Gale and Ellen,
Good citizenship can be taught, but an individual’s sense of community is what puts it into action.
It’s all too easy to find an excuse not to get involved. Your angels have demonstrated a personal commitment to perpetuating the Aloha Spirit.
