Dear Pamela,
I was showing some young friends around Oahu recently. The first stop on our “North Shore Tour” was the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens. It’s always so peaceful and beautiful there! We were there early in the morning, just walking around, when Erin approached us and told us lots of interesting things about the trees and plants we were looking at. And then he just went back to work! He was knowledgeable and friendly, a real asset to the Garden. He deserves to be recognized for having a true aloha spirit. I know he impressed my three guests!

Dear Barbara,
Erin Purple has been a plant propagator at Wahiawa Botanical Garden for four years now, and always finds it rewarding to show off what’s growing. “Sometimes people know the name of a plant or tree but they’ve never seen it,” he says. “It’s fun to show them what we have. Pretty soon they’ll be able to see a very special plant: a jade vine is set to bloom in about two weeks on the parking lot fence!”
Dear Pamela,
I have been riding the No. 6 bus for 56 years. While shopping for a Mainland trip, I was dismayed to find I had lost my big, black umbrella and matching glasses. When I got back from my trip, I got on TheBus and my friend Aileen said, “The driver has your umbrella and glasses.” I was amazed. Dave brought my items every day hoping to see me on TheBus. When I finally did get in touch with him, he brought my umbrella and glasses to my house. I believe he deserves APPLAUSE.

Dear Evalynn,
Your attentive driver Dave was not a regular operator on the No. 6, according to The Bus. On behalf of Dave and all the caring drivers of TheBus, the company thanks you for your letter of appreciation.
Dear Pamela,
My husband and I were in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. The weather was really foul. We took the shuttle to the Superdome and a local woman, her husband and two young adults also were on the bus. We were let out across from the Superdome and the lady helped us cross the wide boulevard. While walking up the steep ramp to the gates, she insisted I use her gloves. It was really cold. In the midst of trying to get through the jam-packed crowds, I was remiss in not getting her name, room number, etc. to return her gloves. I checked with our tour director and searched the dining room at breakfast with no success. To think a total stranger loaned her gloves to someone she didn’t know was amazing. I feel totally blessed to have received so much aloha from this wonderful individual.

Dear Laura,
If your mystery glove donor recognizes the scenario and can name your hotel, she can contact me, and I’ll get you two in touch.
(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
