Please express my appreciation to Vicki, Cathy, Joan and the other wonderful stitchers of Love Quilts. They donate their talent, time and organizational skills in creating beautifully stitched quilts for sick children with life-threatening physical illnesses, most recently for Lanakila on Maui. Thank you, ladies, for bringing stitchers together to make special quilts for these children to love and use as they receive their medical treatment in the hospital.

Love Quilts is a national organization. Founder Cathy Strzyinski lives in Michigan, assistant Joan Miller is in Arizona, quilter Vicki Scott in South Carolina and sign-up organizer Jackie Bennett is in North Carolina.
Vicki writes: “When I was on Maui for a vacation, I saw an ad for fundraising for Lanakila’s mother’s expenses while she stayed close to the hospital in Honolulu. I came home and finished the quilt and mailed it. Shortly after, I heard that Lanakila had passed away. What a sad shock. His quilt would have arrived just before his death. The quilt that I hoped would give him cheer through his recovery would have to give comfort to his family instead. I always hoped that the knowledge that their little boy touched people from so far away helped just a little bit.”
Dear Pamela, I’d like to give some enormous APPLAUSE to Lionel and Francis and other park workers who clean up Kailua Beach. I appreciate all their hard work keeping it beautiful. They do a magnificent job, working seven days a week to make Kailua Beach perfect.

Lionel Garcia and Francis Berinobis are praised by their supervisor, as well. “They are hard workers with a good sense of humor, which is often necessary,” says Gordon Gaison. “Francis lives in Waimanalo and Lionel lives in Kaneohe, so this is their community too.”

As a relocated-to-Texas Hawaii-born, daily I voraciously scour the online newspapers of Hawaii. APPLAUSE is the only collection of good news of good folks! With the constant doom and gloom in other venues and columns with hidden agenda, APPLAUSE is wonderful and uplifting - the first thing I read on Wednesday mornings!
Don’t get me wrong. The folks I’ve met here in “don’t mess with Texas” are super, but it is still most heartwarming to see reaffirmation of the “aloha spirit.” And you are great to make time and effort to share this!
So, thank you, Pamela Young!
