Stranded In Just The Right Place

Dear Pamela,
I would like to send a huge round of APPLAUSE to the wonderful people at Pera European Cars, particularly a young man named Nenad Jeftic, and his father, Pera, for everything they did to help me and my mom when my car broke down off Kapiolani Boulevard. My car would not start and even though it was not European, I walked across the street to Pera European Cars. Nenad, without even hesitating, followed me to my car and diagnosed a problem with my starter. He also put me at ease with his pleasant demeanor and kind ways. Demonstrating such kindness and generosity, he made my mom and me comfortable in their employee lounge, providing us with drinks while his team pushed the car into his shop. He called around town to find the part needed for the repair and even drove to pick it up. He went totally above and beyond to help two very appreciative ladies.
Nenad turned what would have been an enormously frustrating experience into a good one. I can’t thank Nenad and Pera enough for all they did! Mahalo!

Dear Claire,
“They were driving a Toyota Camry, but the problem was easy to diagnose,” says Nenad Jeftic. “They were stranded, and I just wanted to help and be courteous at the same time.”
Dear Pamela,
I would like to recognize Bert Kunihisa of Bert’s Garage for his integrity and kindness. I had called Bert’s Garage for an estimate for car repairs. The 2003 Mazda Protege that was in our temporary care unexpectedly had engine trouble. It could not accelerate readily and its engine warning light came on. When I called Bert for an estimate on the repair cost, he suggested that the car would probably still be under manufacturer’s warranty, and for us to check with the dealer. He said he wouldn’t feel right taking our money. Sure enough, the car was still under manufacturer’s warranty. Not many (if any) would have done what Bert did. A big APPLAUSE to Bert of Bert’s Garage!

Dear Sally,
“Normally when I get latemodel cars in the garage, I have the customers check the warranty,” says Bert Kunihisa. “I hate to see customers pay for something they can get for free.”
Dear Pamela,
A great big mahalo to Kaiser’s Honolulu Clinic for their new Friday Open Markets. I have to take my dad for periodic testing, and that means waiting sometimes for an hour. With a full-time job and three kids of my own, time is very precious. I just do my shopping while I wait for him. I think it was so clever of them to start this market!
Lillian Nguyen
Manoa
Dear Lillian,
“Fresh Fridays started June 18 last year after a California doctor opened a produce market at one of the Kaiser Permanente facilities,” says Kaiser Lifestyle Program coordinator Dennis Kaaihui. “The success of that project inspired similar programs around the country.”
“It’s been really amazing,” says program assistant Ashlyn Izumo. “We just opened Fresh Thursdays at Kaiser Moanalua so people in that area can shop for fresh produce.”
Fresh Fridays at the Kaiser Honolulu Clinic is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fresh Thursdays at Kaiser Moanalua is open 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
