Taking A Tumble At The Right Place

Dear Pamela,
APPLAUSE and thanks to Carolyn at the local Social Security office. She restored my faith in the existence of a caring and efficient human being in this age of bureaucracy and taped menus that are not customer friendly.
As a new retiree, it has been a challenge working on forms and completing necessary applications. Most recently I managed a maze of questions as I applied online for Social Security. Every choice offered me more choices ... then, at the critical moment, the computer froze and I lost it all! Paranoid over all of this data floating in cyberspace, I called Social Security Administration. Many buttons and menus later, I got a human being and was assured that the information was complete.
Days later, I received two separate letters asking for information I had already given. Locally, Carolyn called and directed me to ignore the letters. She gave me clear directions and was very pleasant. Yesterday, I shared with the attending clerk that Carolyn was wonderful and the clerk responded with a broad smile, “Yes, she is!”

Dear Nohea,
Claims administrator Carolyn Shacter says your application was very routine with no complications. “She was very easy to work with ... a very sweet lady. I’m so thankful that she decided to write in. I really appreciate it.”
Dear Pamela,
Aloha is alive and well in Kailua! I was walking from my car in a parking stall near Oahu Dive Center to the post office when I stumbled over a concrete barrier in front of an adjoining parking stall. I went flying! Immediately Randy from the Oahu Dive Center and another young man came to see how I was. They helped me to my feet. One knee and hand were scraped and bleeding. Randy gave me much-needed first aid. I want to say mahalo for being such Good Samaritans.

Dear Mary,
Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Oahu Dive salesperson Randy Bougie had just completed his CPR/First Aid training. “I saw her on the ground and she was bleeding. One of our distributors and I helped her to the picnic table so I could clean up her wounds. After a while she felt well enough to get up and hurry off. She said she had a dental appointment. ”
Dear Pamela,
Overdue APPLAUSE goes to a stranger who found my wallet in a shopping cart at the Kapolei Safeway and promptly turned it in to Customer Service. My “life” is in that wallet, and I was leaving for a trip just days later.

Dear Doris,
This incident may have been a blessing in disguise, perhaps a hint for you to redistribute your “life” into several different articles. Especially when traveling, it’s important to make duplicates of important documents and cards, and place them in theft-proof bags, belts or neck pouches.
(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
