The Gift Of Music For Niu Valley

I am the band director at Niu Valley Middle School. About a month ago, I received word through a colleague that Gail Shoda and her mother, Gladys Murakami, had a piano that they were willing to donate to our school.
I was unable, however, to secure a date where we would have enough manpower to transport it. Disappointed, I called Gail and told her that we were unable to accept the donation, and thanked her anyway. She called me back soon after, and said that her mother was going to pay for a moving company to transport it to our school. I offered to pay for the movers, but she refused. I want to thank both of these ladies for their expression of kindness, as well as Leonard Hasuko from Kawananakoa Middle School for helping me to get in touch with them.

“No one was using the piano and my mom didn’t want to throw it away,” says Gail Shoda. “We were going to donate it to my old school, Kawananakoa, but they didn’t need one. Leonard Hasuka got me in touch with Wayne Fanning at Niu Valley, but he couldn’t find the volunteers to transport the piano from our home. My mom didn’t want anyone to get hurt moving it, so she said, why not? We paid the $150 to move it safely. The important thing is that it will be used by students and faculty who need it. With the funding for schools always being cut, it’s nice that our piano will continue to make music.”

Please help me give APPLAUSE to three kind and compassionate people who assisted me when I had a blown-out tire. Many cars whizzed by, but Gerri Uyesugi stopped to give me moral support until Dale Newcomb and Pvt. Adrian Rivera came by to help me put on the spare. Dale and his wife were so thoughtful that they even followed me to Tony Nissan to be sure I got there safely. Mahalo to Gerri, Dale and his wife, and Adrian for being there for me in a stressful situation.

A grateful motorist would like APPLAUSE to go to Abe and Noe Mossman for stopping to help with my flat tire on the H-1 near Waipahu. Abe stopped and even made three trips to my car because my spare needed air (the first time he passed me on the freeway and went around just to come and help me). What wonderful folks! May

Abe and Noe Mossman of Cutting Edge Landscaping Company say they were in the right place at the right time. “We live just 5 minutes away in Waipio,” says Abe, “so it was no trouble to stop and help her with the flat. She was all alone and we wouldn’t want that to happen to anyone.”
