Dear Pamela, I just finished reading the “Applause” letter in MidWeek from Michael Augusta regarding a memorial honoring American military women over the years. There is a memorial already in D.C., the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation. It was founded 10 years ago, and honors women who have spent any time in the service. I’ve only seen photos of it, but am a charter member myself (U.S.N., 1982-1991).

Mr. Augusta can find more information at www.womensmemorial.org (and my hear-felt thanks to him for wanting to honor all the generations of women who have served our country in time of war and peace).

Dear Pamela,

The national memorial to women military veterans in Washington, D.C., is located at one of the entrances to Arlington Cemetery (the entrance just over the bridge from Foggy Bottom/Georgetown). This month it is celebrating the 10th anniversary of dedication. I am a charter member and was at the dedication in 1997. I am a proud Vietnam era Army veteran.

At the dedication there were women vets from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. It is a beautiful memorial where women vets can put their name and info in a computer base. It is estimated that only 9 percent of some 2.5 million eligible women have actually registered with the memorial.

Yours were just two letters we received in response to Mr. Augusta’s quest to have a national monument built in Washington, D.C., honoring our nation’s women.

Dear Pamela,

I am grateful to your readers for getting the word out there about the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation. That memorial is in Arlington, Va., and my effort is to have one standing in Washington, D.C. - not just to women in the military, but all the brave women who have made our country what it is. Since the revolution, women have given of themselves and have taken leadership roles in every field while supporting and nurturing their families.

I think that deserves recognition as well.
