A Design For The Islands

ASLA President of PBR Hawaii
Over the past 40 years, we at PBR HAWAII have been fortunate to work with great clients who have given us the opportunity to help them achieve their goals for long-term stewardship of their lands.
We are a multidisciplinary community planning and landscape architectural practice committed to providing creative and effective solutions to meet our clients’ individual needs that are not only economically viable, but both culturally and environmentally appropriate for a place as unique as Hawaii. We provide services in landscape architecture, land planning, environmental studies, graphic design and land-use entitlements. Currently, 11 of our professionals are LEED-accredited (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
Russell Chung, our executive vice president, says, “Long before ‘greening’ became a buzzword, our focus has been on understanding the latest sustainable design techniques practiced the world over, and adapting them culturally, environmentally, contextually and economically to our Hawaiian setting.”
Equally strong is our commitment to the education of future practitioners, with a number of our staff serving as advisers and lecturers for the University of Hawaii School of Architecture and Urban Planning programs, as well as at various secondary schools on Oahu.
So as we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we can think of no better way to commemorate this milestone than with an endowed scholarship toward establishing the long-envisioned graduate landscape architecture program at UH, which is currently in its planning stages.
We hope that with this $40,000 endowed scholarship, we will encourage a landscape architecture program that will contribute significantly toward achieving a better environment for all of us. Hawaii is uniquely located in a tropical island environment, so one can easily see how this program would be ideal for students interested in pursuing a career in landscape architecture, community planning or other related environmental design fields.
We are proud to be a part of a firm that has worked on more than 60 award-winning projects, including: Kahoolawe Island Plan, Ko Olina Resort, Kukio, Kapalua, Kamehameha Schools Hawaii and Maui campuses, UH-West Oahu, UH-Hilo, Ala Moana Center, Waipahu Town Center, Case Middle School, Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood at Punahou School, Kahanu Garden Master Plan, and Lihue Town Core Urban Design Plan.
In partnership with UH and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), we are taking a step toward supporting the next generation of planning and design professionals from Hawaii, and aim to ensure continued excellence and leadership in our home state.
You can find us at our offices in Honolulu, Kapolei and Hilo, as well as online at www.pbrhawaii.com.
