An Almost New Windward Mall
|
As my two grandchildren constantly remind me, change can be a good thing.
The day my first granddaughter was born I stopped being a parent and became a grandparent - I was transformed into a fun-loving, beach-going grandfather.
My daughters cannot believe that my wife and I are the same parents who raised them. They are surprised that the two adults who forced them to eat healthy, regular breakfasts as young children now allow their grandkids to consume mint chocolate chip ice cream and canned olives for breakfast. My grandchildren remind me that change is something that we should embrace.
This August, the “Winds of Change” that many shoppers have witnessed blowing through Windward Mall over the past year have finally died down. In its wake is a beautiful, revitalized shopping center for all to enjoy for years to come.
Thanks to the commitment of the mall’s owner, Kamehameha Schools, the management expertise of General Growth Properties, the hard work of the construction crews, and the community’s unwavering support, patience and aloha, Windward Mall will commemorate the completion of the renovation and begin our 25th Anniversary celebration this weekend, Aug. 10-12.
The mall’s $23 million renovation, the first in Windward Mall’s history, brings shoppers the finest in amenities and shopping options. Shoppers see this in our diverse lineup of merchants - both old and new - as well as the physical renovations which included new flooring on both levels, updated entries with beautiful custom tile murals, new soft seating areas, improved lighting, landscaping and signage. This weekend we open our one-of-a-kind children’s soft play area sponsored by Bank of Hawaii and HMSA.
While things change, here at Windward Mall I am also thankful for those things that remain the same. Seventeen wonderful merchants are celebrating this special anniversary with us! There is Hot Dog On A Stick, Maruki Tei, Koolau Pets, Local Motion, Arby’s, H&T Burgers, Sears, Zales - to name just a few. Some have evolved over the years, such as Waldenbooks/Borders Express/Borders and Liberty House/Macy’s.
In late July our new 22,000 square-foot Borders, complete with a Starbucks café, kicked open its doors, offering shoppers an even larger selection of books, DVDs and CDs. In the coming months we will welcome more new merchants including The Children’s Place, Ninja Sushi and Skin Industries.
This weekend, we invite residents from across the island to rediscover Windward Mall! Our 25th Anniversary and Grand Reopening events include appearances by golf sensation Tadd Fujikawa and Lt. Andy Baldwin from ABC’s The Bachelor, as well as live concerts with Hapa (sponsored by Borders) and Fiji, and a fun-filled comedy block with Frank De Lima, Andy Bumatai and Da Braddahs. Plus catch authors and illustrators at Borders on Saturday afternoon. Please visit www.windwardmall.com for start times and details.
Though they are still young, my grandchildren have already shared with me many important lessons - like changing it up and eating ice cream for breakfast. I believe shoppers will find Windward Mall’s changes just as enjoyable.
