For many corporations, it seems that the bottom line is what drives the organization. Our kama’aina company, Nutrex Hawaii, has taken a different approach to business. We focus on the triple bottom line: people, planet, profit.

Based out of Kona, our company is an algae aquaculture farm sitting on 90 acres of coastal lava fields. Since 1983 we have been growing highly nutritional food supplements.

For more than 20 years we have been committed to providing people with whole food products that promote optimal health and wellness. Our first aquaculture product was Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica. Spirulina is the richest source of nutrition in the world. It is a food that can help regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol; a food that can alleviate pain from inflammation and deliver antioxidant activity to ward off threatening diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and stroke; that helps and protects the liver and kidneys; that removes radiation from the body; that improves the immune system, alleviates allergies and has been proven to fight off many different viruses; that helps your eyes and brain; and a food that helps to increase friendly flora in the intestines, improving digestion.

Recent research sponsored by the U.S. government showed that Spirulina protects against aging of the brain. Last fall, AARP Magazine ran an article on the “Five foods that can add years to your life” and ranked Spirulina No 1.

BioAstin, Natural Astaxanthin, represents our latest achievement. BioAstin, the world’s strongest antioxidant, is a concentrated extract from a different species of microalgae that works as a natural anti-inflammatory. This helps people in many different ways - from arthritis to carpal tunnel syndrome to sports-related joint pain. And it even works as an anti-inflammatory in your skin, serving as an internal sunscreen to reduce UV damage to the skin and prevent sunburn. Scientists have discovered other benefits of BioAstin for humans through several independent clinical trials. BioAstin helps increase strength, endurance, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure.

Besides the health and well-being of people, we are deeply committed to the health of our planet. With the success of Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth, concern for the environment has been on the forefront of most people’s minds. Since our inception, Nutrex Hawaii maintains an environmentally responsible philosophy in the development and production of its products, using natural production methods and resources that employ extensive recycling of raw materials and nutrients. The production system operates without the use of pesticides and herbicides, and does not create erosion, fertilizer runoff or water pollution.

The growing of Spirulina leaves a much lighter footprint on the planet than most other agricultural efforts. It takes about 14,160 gallons of water to produce one pound of protein from beef. Spirulina takes only 500 gallons of water to produce the same amount of protein. Also, on one acre of land about 46 pounds of beef protein can be produced. On that same acre, 8,000 pounds of protein can be produced from Spirulina.

Not only are our products and methods environmentally friendly - our company has even been honored by the Hawaiian Audubon Society with its Corporate Conservation Award for our efforts to help the endangered Hawaiian stilts by creating a 1.7-acre wetland established and managed by our company. We believe that sustainable production methods result in substantially lower operating costs.

By focusing first on people and planet, Nutrex Hawaii has built a healthy corporation.
