My grandfather, K.J. Luke, opened Hawaii National Bank 50 years ago with the goal of making banking accessible and useful to both individuals and businesses.

In banking, it’s important to build strong relationships, have trust and security, and understand where your money is going. That’s why we make all decisions locally and continue to innovate as times change. We pioneered the state’s first student loan program to give more young people the ability to afford a four-year college education, as well as free checking options and home equity lines of credit. And that was all in the first few years.

Today, under the leadership of my father Warren, we remain a community bank that specializes in serving locally owned, closely held businesses and individual account holders. We continue to offer highly personalized service along with improved products such as rewards debit and credit cards, a new website and mobile banking as well as a range of options tailored to the needs of business owners.

While we remain committed to helping customers handle the big things in life, we also never forget the small stuff. Building on the philosophies of my grandfather, who was known for things such as loaning out umbrellas on rainy days, we spend extra time to understand the needs of each customer and offer programs like Kids’ Banking for families and hands-on training for businesses.

We are also proud to give back to the communities that have supported us, actively volunteering time and resources to those in need throughout Hawaii.

Building these close relationships and providing value-added support is the way banking should be done, and it is what will be the driving force behind the industry for years to come.
