Founder and President of Ohana Beach Rentals Hawaii

After a very successful 25-year career as a CEO of a leading candy manufacturing and importing company in the United States and China, I sold my company interests in 2003 and began a life-changing career transition that brought me back to my second home in Hawaii. Being an owner-investor of a few vacation rental properties on the island of Oahu, I sought out a better way to efficiently manage and market my properties than how the status quo had been conducting business for years.

My wife, Rachel, and I created Ohana Beach Rentals Hawaii. We bring many new ideas on delivering superior customer service, not only for visitors who stayed at my vacation rentals, but to property owners and investors as well. With a personal touch in running the organization from a property owner’s standpoint, I have made Ohana Beach Rentals Hawaii a model company among competitors in this growing and highly regulated business segment on Oahu.

Nearly six years old now, Ohana Beach Rentals Hawaii has grown to be Oahu’s largest luxury vacation rental company with more than 90 properties in our inventory. Our company boasts an array of products to suit the needs of a wide range of vacationers from luxury travelers and couples-on-the-go to families and savvy repeat visitors who have moved on from vacationing in the typical hotel room scenario to more exclusive accommodations.

Our philosophy is that each guest who stays with us is just as important as a property owner who places his very costly real estate investment into our trustworthy and very capable hands. When you develop a symbiotic relationship among guests and your property owners and investors, everything flows well. Your brand becomes a powerful messaging tool as it speaks for itself.

Ohana Beach Rentals Hawaii relates part of its success to securing the right inventory that goes along with its high-quality product line. Our company deems itself as a “horizontal hotelier” as we recruit only the best units in each building, home or neighborhood on Oahu that would qualify to be part of our luxury rental program.

Requirements for joining Ohana’s program include being in a highly desirable location, great views, upgraded interiors and furnishings, gourmet kitchens, top-quality linens and towels, and high-tech qualities like wireless Internet and upgraded home electronics, only to name a few. These items are in place to deliver clients with an “at-home feel” while vacationing in one of Ohana’s luxury properties.

The impressive collection of properties within our portfolio includes beachfront homes, fine estates, resort condominium suites and a full management contract for the Diamond Head Beach Hotel & Residences, a 64-unit hotel on the Gold Coast of Waikiki. What’s even more impressive is that the company will soon represent a number of studios and suites at the newly opened Trump International Hotel & Tower in Waikiki.

Most of our guests are very travel-savvy and they look beyond the sun, sand and surf for a more experiential vacation experience. Our vacation homes and resort condominium products add a different dimension to a traveler’s itinerary - a feeling of a home away from home while in the Islands. You have separate bedrooms for privacy, a full kitchen for meals, premium views, and lots of space inside and out to do whatever you desire - unlike a typical hotel room.

In the last few years, although Hawaii’s visitor industry had been experiencing challenges with lower visitor arrivals, our bookings have remained strong and consistent. In 2010, the company has reached a pinnacle where its grown beyond its current inventory.

That’s somewhat of a good problem to have where demand outweighs your inventory. The challenge for us is to bring in more luxury rentals into our inventory to keep up with consumer demand, so we are now concentrating our efforts in securing more inventory with our eyes set on nonrepresented units at Trump Waikiki and many brand new condominium developments in the area.

I attribute Ohana Beach Rentals Hawaii’s overall success to many contributing factors including a strong marketing program that has developed a premier luxury vacation rental brand on Oahu, keeping on track by recruiting the right property inventory, remaining atop of the curve when it comes to Web site development and consumer direct business, embarking upon a top-notch guest service and owner relations program, and remaining fluid while market conditions fluctuate.

Aside from the luxury vacation rental product, the company also offers many other services within its circle of operations including: Distinctive Homes Hawaii, a full-service real estate brokerage firm; an in-house travel agency; concierge services division; private chef and catering services; private butler services; cleaning services division; and an interior design and home remodeling segment of the company, headed by company co-founder Rachel Daniel, an accomplished interior designer of luxury residential projects.

As we move forward in 2010, we look forward to continually growing our luxury vacation rental brand in the Islands with possible future expansion plans that include growth for the organization outside of Hawaii.
