Vice President of Goodson+Yu Design

Roger Yu and I met when we were both graphic designers with our own businesses. We admired each other’s work, were attracted to each other, and decided to join forces.

We created Goodson+Yu Design in 1978. Our chemistry was unique: Roger was born and raised in Hawaii, and I am a native New Yorker. Five years later we were married.

In the more than 30 years we’ve been in business, we’ve seen our profession totally transform from rubber cement and T-squares to graphic tablets and wireless mice. But some things have remained the same: our ability to work together with our clients to find solutions that target their objectives, to visually interpret the essence of their business, and our precise attention to details of time and budget.

We started our firm as a two-person business, increasing our staff over the years by hiring employees and taking on interns from the University of Hawaii Art Department. We’ve come full circle now and returned to our original setup, finding it more effective to work with trusted professionals such as writers, illustrators, historians and photographers as a project may require. By tailoring a team to work on a specific project, we can match skill sets and styles for the best results.

We work equally well with marketing and public relations firms as with end-users themselves. Our clients have included corporate, government and nonprofit organizations; hotels, resorts and luxury properties; in-house promotional and fundraising departments; and a plethora of local companies, both established and start-up.

Clients recognize that we add an instant professional graphic design capability to their existing team.

By having us manage the visual elements, we can create a unique brand and company-wide visual unity. Our clients also know that they are talking to the actual people who will do the work. Our compact size allows personalized service without costly overhead.

We have earned numerous awards and accolades since we began our journey together. We recently received three national Awards of Excellence from Graphic Design USA for our logo designs for the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Bright Light Marketing, and AsiaPacificFilms.com. Our list of clients continues to grow.

Goodson+Yu Design is always excited to take on new assignments for our longtime clients and to explore the challenges that new clients bring us.

What have we learned over these many years?

Love what you do and do it honorably.
