The ability to communicate and exchange information instantly, across vast distances, has been a boon to Hawaii residents.
On the Big Island, communicating even small distances can pose a tremendous challenge when you have Mauna Kea to contend with. That was the concern faced by New West Broadcasting, a Hilo-based radio station that also serves Kailua-Kona. The problem New West faced was getting its live stream broadcast from Hilo to Kona with 13,796-foot Mauna Kea sitting between the two towns. We were able to solve this dilemma by delivering its data from Hilo over a fiber optic cable to the Kona transmitter, where it could be rebroadcast to listeners.
Fiber optics and ICT also can bring new economy industries, such as Life Sciences, IT and software to areas where these jobs were once difficult to come by. Maui Research and Technology Center, based in Kihei, is a great example of this phenomenon. Formerly only a tourist destination, MRTC is now one of Hawaii’s most significant high-tech centers. Wavecom Solutions, which provides fiber and services to MRTC, supports technology, infrastructure companies and key industry niches ranging from astronomy to biotechnology. MRTC tenants such as Goodfellow Brothers and the Akimeka & Maui Economic Development Board create good paying jobs and help drive the sustainability of our economy.
As Hawaii’s mature industries such as agriculture and service sectors diminish in importance, “new economy” sectors such as sustainable energy, software and IT will grow to take their place. More importantly, they will create better-paying jobs that will keep our young people in Hawaii.
