Have you ever wondered what “On The Cutting Edge” really means in today’s high-tech world? At a time when your personal computer feels ancient only a year after buying it and wireless phones do new tricks every month, the world has come to expect nothing less than “cutting edge.” With this constant influx of technological upgrades, it’s easy to miss when something truly revolutionary lands in our lap or, in this case, on our lap-tops.
Last week, Sprint Hawaii launched the first 3G high-speed wireless service, EVDO or Evolution Data Optimized, in the Hawaii market. Hawaii is one of the initial 64 U.S. metropolitan areas where Sprint offers EVDO, which brings groundbreaking wireless broadband-like speeds that are up to 10 times faster than 1xRTT service, EVDO’s predecessor.
Let me illustrate. With 1xRTT technology, it takes an average of 402 seconds (or 6.7 minutes) to download an e-mail with a 3 megabyte attachment. That same file will download in just 43.5 seconds using EVDO. For music enthusiasts, it takes 540 seconds (or 9 minutes) to download a song file that is 4 megabytes using 1XRTT. That time is reduced to 58 seconds using EVDO.
The arrival of this technology represents a significant step in convergence with the introduction of several new and enhanced entertainment, information and communication services that will operate via the high-speed Sprint Power VisionSM Network powered by EVDO technology. With a data connection card and laptop or a convenient EVDO-capable wireless phone, those needing high-speed data are no longer tethered by phone or cable lines nor limited to fixed hotspots, making them more efficient and productive while on the go.
Recognizing the utility and appeal of EVDO, the City and County of Honolulu allowed us to equip a city bus at our launch event last week to demonstrate how this type of technology can make public transportation more attractive and productive for commuters. Imagine being able to jump-start your work day before ever setting foot in the office, accessing e-mail and surfing the web on your laptop or wireless phone while saving money on gas and doing your part to ease Oahu’s traffic congestion.
We were also pleased to announce that the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) has been equipped with Sprint’s EVDO service. This donation will enable the Red Cross to have a fully functioning, totally connected mobile office at the scene of major disasters.
Beyond these public service applications, the Sprint Power VisionSM Network will also enable private businesses to enhance customer service performance, respond to customer needs and improve the bottom line. Unlike WiFi, an EVDO wireless connection to a company network is just as secure as working in the office. Hundreds of businesses are already working with us to deploy EVDO technology to better serve their customers.
Locally, Central Pacific HomeLoans already equips its sales force with wireless phones and laptops and expects to move mortgages even faster using EVDO service, giving them the edge in a competitive industry. Y. Hata & Co. is also upgrading to EVDO and foresees this new technology as a means to increased productivity and a way to differentiate itself from competition with transactions fully executed in the field at the customer’s site.
We are on the verge of an explosion in wireless data. EVDO will take us there.
