I have a wonderful office that overlooks Honolulu Harbor, and there’s not a day that goes by that I’m not thankful to work in such a beautiful place.

Since coming to these Islands six years ago from the East Coast I have a much better understanding of why people born here cherish the lifestyle and don’t want to leave. For me, it’s the employees of Dick Pacific Construction that really make working in Hawaii so special.

At Dick Pacific we have a statement: “The means by which a result is achieved is as important as the result itself.” This simple statement is what I believe motivates our employees to do outstanding work every day. We accomplish this by delivering quality work on time through safe and cost-effective means and always take that extra step to make a client happy. I call it teamwork in action.

For example, our project teams never cease to amaze me. At our Wheeler Army Airfield project we were originally scheduled to complete the new barracks in August 2005. But we rushed to complete it after receiving a request from top brass to get the job done in February so that our returning troops from Iraq could come home to new quarters. An action plan was developed and our construction crews, subcontractors and vendors worked extended hours to make it happen. Through this kind of team effort, we finished the project six months ahead of schedule.

And this is only one example of our team in action. There have been many others where our people “never failed” to get the job done because of hard work and dedication. Whether it’s a construction project or a community effort — such as our annual “Helping the Community” golf tournament, which has raised more than $175,000, or helping to rebuild a nonprofit’s facility on “Make a Difference Day” — they give 110 percent.

Dick Pacific has achieved numerous awards because of our employees. A few years ago, we became the first Hawaii contractor to win The Associated General Contractors of America’s National Grand Award for Construction Safety Excellence. We were quite honored because the association represents more than 36,000 general contractors nationwide.

Our success has led us to expand beyond Hawaii to do construction projects on the West Coast and Guam with Hawaii as our home base. But we will always provide Hawaii with the best and safest team of construction professionals in the state.

Living in these Islands has changed me both professionally and personally. Professionally, I believe there is no better place than Hawaii to learn about the importance of relationships and working together as a team. Personally, I have a great collection of aloha shirts and surfboards.

Dick Pacific’s Hawaii roots go back more than 68 years, and our projects have helped shape the skyline of these Islands. Through it all, it’s been our employees who embody the spirit of our organization. They are the “Pride of the Pacific” and I’m proud to be one of them.

Next week: D. Kona Smith, director of Ohana Hearing Care
