American Cabinetry celebrates its 29th anniversary with the opening of second retail showroom at Kukui Grove Mall in Lihue.

The company designs new and remodeled kitchens, bathrooms and custom cabinetry such as entertainment centers and display cabinets. They make counter tops, and they represent 25 lines of appliances such as Sub Zero, Wolf, Maytag and KitchenAid.

With a crew of 12 employees at the main 5,000-square-foot Mapunapuna showroom, vice president Steve Pak is especially proud of the close-knit family atmosphere of his staff. And he intends to keep that trademark in the forefront with all of his customers.

“Family support keeps us grounded,” Pak says, noting that his brother and sister also work in the company.

Pak’s stepfather, Wayne Bouille, started the firm in 1978.

“Every bathroom needs a floor and every kitchen needs appliances,” says Pak. “In the 1980s the company did a lot of work with the condos.”

Pak, an Aiea High School grad, entered the business in 1991 and grew with the company thanks to the tutelage of his stepfather and the many designers who took him under their wings.

It wasn’t so clear early on in Pak’s life that he’d be in the family business.

“When my cousins were making model planes and cars, I would do one and I’d have six pieces left over,” he recalls. “My talent with my hands wasn’t that great, but during summer vacations I’d help out in the showroom.”

Through reading books, asking questions and visiting project sites, he learned the business. He credits the comfortable learning environment to his success in being a part of the family business for the past 16 years, which he’s carrying on as

his stepfather passed away last year. Pak’s younger brother Ryan Boyd wears many hats in the family business, including that of certified kitchen designer. Mom Chong Bouille worked in the office until she was promoted to grandma duties, caring for her daughter Regina Kekua’s daughter, Paris. Kekua serves as office manager and appreciates the support of her mom as well as her husband Patrick.

One of the company’s most rewarding projects was extending a small enclosed kitchen.

“The owners were so happy with it that they came back to tell us how much they loved their kitchen,” Pak recalls. “They said the kitchen is someplace they had to be before, and now it is someplace they love to be.”

The owners were so happy with their kitchen that they allowed American Cabinetry to feature it in the yearly industry show, Kitchen and Bath Tours.

American Cabinetry is located at 619 Mapunapuna St. The hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 838-7770 or log onto www.americancabinetry.com
