Hawaiian Sun Juices Go ‘Light’

Mark Honda carries a couple of cases of the
new light line of Hawaiian Sun canned juices
coming to stores this month
Hawaiian Sun Products president Brian Tsuruda is excited about releasing a lower-calorie, and lower-sugar line of juices in its most popular flavors: passion orange, green tea with ginseng, guava, and passion orange guava.
“It’s an option to our regular line, especially with the health and wellness that’s on everyone’s mind,” said Tsuruda, who has been with the firm for 28 years. “The light drinks will appear in stores very soon — this month.”
The business was started by two brothers in 1952 making tropical fruit preserves with a secret family recipe because fruits were so abundant. The Hawaiian Sun brand logo that locals are familiar with graces the jams and jellies, as well as the brightly colored 11.5 ounces of aluminum canned juices that comes in 22 flavors combining guava, lilikoi, passion fruit, papaya, pineapple, strawberry and orange.
Before this new line of light juices, the 53-year-old family business branched out with its own line of chocolate-covered macadamia nut candy. Hawaiian Sun Products also creates frozen juices that hotels and restaurants use to make tropical drinks like daiquiris. Rounding out the select line of goods is the Luau brand syrup, coconut milk, and Kona blend coffees. These products are made with locally grown guava and macadamia nuts from the Big Island and sugar from Maui.
The firm’s tasty merchandise is available at Foodland, Safeway, Star, Daiei, Longs, K-mart, Wal-Mart and other locations on Oahu and the neighbor islands. The company also distributes other products such as frozen Okara Saimin, and Hawaiian Natural Teas.
The central nerve of the operations is at the warehouse and office space on Sand Island Access Road, while the Kalihi-based factory does all the manufacturing with more than 100 employees.
“We’re trying to grow,” says Mark Honda, the sales and marketing manager, who’s been with the company for 13 years. “We are looking into branching out worldwide. We are researching looking into the Mainland stores, and possibly the commissaries.”
Honda notes that products that make it to the Mainland will depend on the customer requests.
