Whether families would like someone to help explain medical mumbo jumbo or give them a helping hand to manage doctors appointments for an aging parent who lives far away, Hookele Personal Health Planners has developed a way to give loved ones some extra help in the medical field.
Neal Winn, Bonnie Castonguay and Dew-Anne Langcaon decided this is something today’s multitasking adult needs help with, so they named their business Ho’okele, which means the navigator or the voyager.
“We chose that name because it is what we are trying to do,” says Langcaon.
Castonguay elaborates: “We want to help them when they are healthy too. We can have this in an emergency or a plan B. We can explain the pros and cons of staying at home versus assisted living facilities.”
Winn adds, “Doctors, families and patients can be more confident that doctors’instructions are enforced.”
Open since September 2006, so far there are about a dozen physicians, therapists and nurses who can meet with families at home, in a medical facility, and in their small office on Beretania Street.
Langcoan emphasizes that they are healthcare professionals
and they understand the health-care system so that families don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
The three co-founders share a lot of experience in the health-care industry. Winn, who serves as chief medical officer, moved to Hawaii in 1964 as a Naval medical officer. He has done extensive work with Kapiolani Health, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children and Kapiolani Medical Specialists. Castonguay, who serves as chief operating officer, has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. A St. Andrew’s Priory graduate, Castonguay started her nursing career as a staff nurse at St. Francis Hospital, and she also worked at Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali, and Hawaii Pacific Health. Langcaon, who serves as chief executive officer, previously worked as executive vice president and chief strategic officer for Hawaii Pacific Health. Also a St. Andrew’s Priory grad, Langcaon is an Aiea resident and has a master’s degree in accounting.
“With any new business, there are challenges getting the word out,” says Langcaon. “It’s marketing and education. People haven’t had this available to them. You can see the relief on their faces. It’s like having a friend.”
