Danielle Scherman is always starting something new.
She started her own events company called Soiree Events. She started her own online networking organization for event planners. And she started a group called Social Wahines so women in Hawaii could have fun and network together.
“I decided to get all my girlfriends together, and we did a clothing swap,” explains Scherman, a Kalaheo graduate. “None of them knew each other, so to introduce each other, we each did a one-minute pitch. Everyone loved it. They thought it was so cool.”
At first they gathered at the girlfriends’ homes - then it grew. With 300 members so far, all through word of mouth, Social Wahines is still growing. Membership is free, and members pay $10 per event to attend monthly functions, which have included a wine tasting, spa night, sample sale and a craft party.
The impetus for starting Social Wahines in Hawaii is that Scherman lived in Manhattan for four years, where she was used to attending networking groups, which were done differently than they were here. She returned to Hawaii in 2006 to spend time with her family, as her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I needed more stimulation,” recalls the entrepreneur about why she felt there was a need for women, specifically young women, to network. That’s why she created Social Wahines.
Scherman’s accomplishments while living in New York City include starting the New York Event Planners association, which is a free e-mail-based discussion group of more than 3,000 members, as well as starting the website www.eventheadquarters.com.
While back in Hawaii, in honor of her mother, who is now in remission, she created the Cool Kailua Nights Block Party and Health Awareness Fair, which debuted last year. The next one is planned for Feb. 2, 2008.
The next Social Wahines gathering will be a pearl tasting, which compares a pearl to fine wine, at Accent Honolulu at the IBM Building, 1240 Ala Moana Blvd. Dec. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the event, also presented by Pacific Edge Magazine, will benefit SCORE Hawaii. At this event and others, Scherman’s starting something new - new relationships for herself and others.
