Tony Medina of Akamai Grocery Shopping really delivers

The husband-and-wife team of Tony Medina and Monica Faux pick out a papaya, pickles, Pop Tarts or anything else on your grocery shopping list and deliver it to you.

“I love shopping,” says Medina, who took over the Akamai Grocery Shopping and Delivery Service from its previous owners in June 2006. The couple knew the previous owners, who’d established the company in 2000, from work and from church.

He takes the orders via e-mail, fax or phone, shops from 3:30 to 8 a.m., and then delivers the groceries from 8 a.m. to noon in a van equipped with a refrigerator and a cooler.

“If you have club cards, we can usually just give the cashier your telephone number and you’ll get the savings,” he explained. “And if you don’t have a club card, we have them, so you’ll get the savings anyway.”

Medina touts saving time, money and the stress of long lines as some of the benefits of using the service, which goes to select stores. The company’s delivery area presently covers downtown Honolulu to Hawaii Kai.

Faux, a Kamehameha Schools grad, handles the company’s marketing, which includes its brochures.

Medina, a California native with 15 years of experience as a server in the restaurant industry, says the couple pushed up their possible September wedding date to June, so that this business would be something they did as a couple. They got married June 7, and June 15 the Makakilo-based couple bought the business. Their love for each other extends to their customers as they sometimes just spend time visiting with them in the hospital if someone gets sick.

“We pray with some of our customers too,” says Medina, who hopes to someday do missionary work overseas. “We have a passion to go out and do everything to make our customers happy.”

Medina notes that some customers call every week, some once a month. If Medina hasn’t heard from a customer in a while, he says he’ll just call them to see how they are doing. He recalls last year they also helped customers with their holiday shopping.

“We’ve picked up people’s fruits, vegetables, TVs, VCRs and toaster ovens,” he says.

The company’s future includes having a booth at fairs so more people will get to know about their services.

My husband and I know Tony and Monica and have all good things to say about them.  They have heart heart and more heart. We met them at a Church Ohana group. They are truly devoted to eachother and it shows in the way they run their business. They have a love for people that just shines. Their service does not stop with Akami. They keep blankets and other supplies in the trunk of their car always ready to serve the needs of the homeless. These two have true hearts of Christ.
