Nearly everyone in Hawaii remembers where they were and what they were doing during the Oct. 15, 2006 earthquake. Chaz Bowser was the only one in his Ewa Beach neighborhood of Ocean Pointe who had lights on that evening. So his neighbors started asking him to help them be prepared for the next crisis.

That gave Bowser the idea for a business selling survival kits, so he started his company, Island Consulting Concepts, in anticipation of his retirement from the military. He also teaches people how to use guns.

“I have 20 years of survival training, and I’ve been in combat six times,” says the U.S. Army special operations field grade officer.

He believes what sets his survival kits apart from others is that they are custom-made to the person and their family, using the skills and knowledge he has gained in the field.


“I don’t just sell you a kit, I show you how to use it,” he says. “After I show it to you, I waterproof everything, including the instructions.”

Some survival kits include a desalinization water system so you can have drinkable water. Kits also include a walkie-talkie, knife, fuel and stove, radio, generator and a complete first aid kit.

Bowser suggests getting a three-day backpack for each car, and a 30-day kit for the house. A seven-day kit is also available.

“We would all like to think the military will be there to rescue us, but the military is out at war with all their equipment, so there is no rescue coming,” he warns.

Bowser and his wife Theresa have two children, 9-year-old Kalyn and 7-year-old Logan. Originally from Haleiwa, Bowser attended schools on the Mainland, and has also worked as a police officer in California.


With the survival kits, he says, one of his main challenges is to convince people that it is something they will need.

“We get car insurance in case something happens,” he explains. “It is unfortunate that some people would rather buy a new flat-screen TV than be prepared in case something happens. But as soon as we have a crisis announced, my website has more hits.”
