Morgan Childs: ‘the key is to be
organized’

Morgan Childs says her job is to make sure everyone has a great time at the party.

Her company, Moana Events, specializes in generating publicity for a company by branding its events cohesively, in different ways.

“Once the people come to your event, and they have a great time, they now have an experience and a connection with your company,” she says.

In a Valentines day fundraiser for the non-profit organization Bowery Mission in New York City, she designed an invitation with the two red doors of the building as a tease to what the event would be like. The theme of the event was about surrounding the city with love. Attendees took their picture in a photo booth, then when they got to their tables, they could place their picture inside a red leather bookmark that had a clear plastic window in the shape of a heart. She says the event raised more than $1 million.

“There are lots of meetings, and lots of phone calls,” she admits. “The key is to be organized.”

The Kauai High School graduate got her degree in musical theater in Boston. She moved to New York City where she started managing bands and doing their public relations. She threw a CD release party for one of the bands, and that’s when she found her calling in event planning. Soon another band called her to do its CD release party. She’s coordinated events which featured Vera Wang fashions, actor Tony Danza, and domestic diva Martha Stewart.

Inspired by the beauty of the beach, ocean, flowers, mountains, sunsets, she returned to Hawaii to set up her business. She also does wedding planning. A new facet of her business is event consulting where people can hire her for some new party ideas.

One of the challenges of doing events, Childs says, is that something may go wrong.

“The key is to be calm,” she explains. “Let your client know that it will be OK, and figure out what you can do to solve the problem, or accept that you’ll have to make-do without. There’s no point in freaking out. That doesn’t help the situation.”

Her hopes for the future include bringing her event planning style to California and the East Coast.

“The show must go on,” she says.
