Imagine that you have everything you could really want in life. If you did, then what would you want? Time and luxury is what Gloria Garvey and Brook Gramann say they want. That’s one reason they created Lanikai Bath and Body.

The fresh smell of the luxurious boutique draws tourists and locals to their locally made line of more than 18 different scents of lotions, shampoo, conditioners, body washes, body scrubs, massage oils and bubble bath.

“It’s nice to be a business in the community you live in, and you can make more friends,” says Garvey, a Kailua resident and Connecticut native who moved to Hawaii 35 years ago.

One of their many friends in the community is Robin Petersen of Sharon’s Plants in Waimanalo. Peterson comes to the shop and provides a variety fresh flowers to accent the store’s decor.

Denise Diamond on Maui created their product lines which feature scents such as mango coconut, Tahitian gardenia, plumeria, and orchid vanilla. Martin and McArthur also carries a line of some Lanikai Bath and Body products at Ala Moana, the Hyatt and on Maui. A store in Chicago is also on their client list. They created a men’s line called Pohaku that has toner, conditioning shampoo, body wash, and body lotion, all based on the sandalwood scent. The locals may enjoy the Lanikai Breeze line which features products in larger 16.5 oz. containers. Garvey says that men and women can enjoy the Naupaka Line as it has the coconut lime and verbena. The shop has additional product lines including an unscented, or as they call it an unzented, line of Buddha Surf.

Last month, they launched their online store, which is already garnering repeat customers. The marketing gurus released their Lanikai Poi Dog line of dog products in the Chinese lunar year of the dog.

Garvey’s husband, Scott, a Punahou grad and Boston restaurant owner, often tug on the talents of their son Ian, who used to work in Kailua shop. The younger Garvey also graduated from the culinary school at Kapiolani Community College and helps his dad in the food biz.

Thus, the over 500-square-foot oasis, which opened in October 2005, is run by two part-time managers and six part-time employees. Garvey and Gramann help out at the store on an as-needed basis.

Garvey and Gramann have another business together. They used to work for Milici Valenti Ng Pak. Then in 1988 they decided to start The Brand Strategy, so they could be closer to their growing children. The Brand Strategy office is in the building above Assaggio’s in Kailua.

The partners continue their day jobs as business owners of Kailua-based The Brand Strategy. After so many years of coaching other businesses on what the best strategies would be to succeed, they decided to follow their own advice.

“We always wanted to realize a brand from start to finish on our own,” says Garvey, “where we are the client, and we do everything we tell ourselves to do.”

As both are members of the Rotary Club and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, they believe in giving back to the community. One such event is the Lanikai Bath and Body Women’s Night Doubles at Kailua Racquet Club in November, where proceeds from the event go to breast cancer research.

Starting in July, Garvey and Gramann will introduce their home line, Ainahau, named after Princess Kaiulani’s “gracious and lovely” home in Waikiki. Since Princess Kaiulani’s favorite flower was the pikake, the liquid kitchen soap, hand sanitizer, and mist will smell like pikake.

Lanikai Bath and Body is located at 767 Kailua Road Suite 104 on the corner of Hamakua Drive. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
